Hair Shedding

Hair shedding, a common concern for many individuals, is a natural part of the hair growth cycle. Both men and women typically lose about 100-150 strands of hair daily. However, when hair shedding becomes noticeably excessive, it may be indicative of a condition known as telogen effluvium, which requires attention to uncover any underlying issues.

Understanding Hair Shedding vs. Hair Loss

Excessive hair shedding, or telogen effluvium, is often triggered by significant stress events. These can range from physiological stress like rapid weight loss, major surgeries, and childbirth, to emotional stress and severe nutritional deficiencies. Even changes in medication, such as stopping birth control pills, can disrupt the normal hair growth cycle, leading to increased shedding. Unlike regular hair shedding, telogen effluvium involves a larger portion of hair entering the resting phase (telogen phase) of the hair cycle simultaneously, leading to more noticeable hair loss.
The onset of excessive hair shedding usually becomes apparent a few months after the triggering event. This delay is due to the nature of the hair growth cycle, where hair that enters the resting phase stays there for about three months before shedding. Therefore, a stressful event in March, for instance, might not result in noticeable hair shedding until June. The duration of this excessive shedding varies depending on the resolution of the underlying cause. If the stressor is short-lived, hair shedding might return to normal within six months. However, in cases where the stressors are prolonged or chronic, such as ongoing illness, long-term stress, or enduring nutritional imbalances, the shedding can persist for a longer period.
In some cases, prolonged telogen effluvium can lead to noticeable thinning of hair, as the normal balance between shedding and hair growth is disrupted for an extended period. Understanding these differences and timelines is key in determining the right course of action and treatment for hair restoration.
