What is a Hair Transplant?

A hair transplant procedure moves healthy follicles from a donor area, usually the back of the scalp, into thinning or balding zones. The follicles taken from the donor site are genetically resistant to the hormone DHT that causes pattern baldness, so once they take root in the new location, they keep growing for life.

The terms hair grafting, hair implants, and follicle transplantation all describe the same core process: transferring living follicles to restore density. At Kopelman Hair Restoration, this work goes beyond the scalp. We also perform eyebrow transplants in NYC to rebuild thin or sparse brows, along with advanced solutions for frontal hair loss.

FUE vs. FUT: Which Technique Is Right for You?

The two main grafting methods are FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation). Each suits a different patient profile.

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

With FUE, follicles are extracted one by one from the donor zone using a small punch tool. There is no linear scar, recovery is faster, and patients can wear short hairstyles afterward. This is the most common request at our Manhattan clinic.

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)

Also called the strip method, FUT removes a thin band of scalp from the donor area. The follicles are then dissected from that strip and placed into the recipient zone. FUT can move more grafts in a single session, which makes it useful for patients with advanced balding, but it leaves a fine linear scar.

The right choice depends on your hair loss pattern, donor density, scalp condition, and lifestyle. Dr. Kopelman walks you through both during your consultation.

What to Expect for Your Hair Transplant

PHASE 01

Consultation

Dr. Kopelman meets with you in person or virtually to review your medical history and assess your current hair loss pattern. He maps your new hairline, takes photographs, and sets realistic expectations for your results at 8 to 12 months. You leave with a graft estimate and a scheduled procedure date.
During this visit, Dr. Kopelman will:
PHASE 02

Pre-Operative Visit

Your team confirms details before surgery. You receive a detailed instructions packet, prescription medications are sent to your pharmacy in advance, and you discuss anesthesia preferences. This visit can happen virtually for out-of-town patients.

PHASE 03

Surgery Day

On arrival your donor and recipient zones are marked and photographed. Local anesthesia numbs the scalp. The procedure has three stages:

Donor harvest: Follicles are extracted from the back of your scalp using FUE, FUT, or a combination of both.

Site creation: Dr. Kopelman creates microscopic recipient sites at the correct angle, depth, and density to mimic your natural hairline.

Placement: Two to three hair technicians place each graft simultaneously, working in parallel to keep follicles healthy and reduce total procedure time.

Most patients spend 8 to 12 hours in the chair and go home the same day. You’ll have a light protective wrap applied before you leave.

PHASE 04

Going Home

You leave with a saline spray for the recipient area and a list of activity restrictions for the first 2 weeks. Follow all post-op instructions closely, they’re what keep your grafts healthy during the critical early phase.
PHASE 05

Recovery Timeline

Weeks 1–2

Light scabbing and mild swelling are normal and clear by day 14. You can wear a loose cap from day one and return to work within 1 to 3 days. Around week 3, all transplanted hairs will have shed. This is expected and means your follicles are cycling correctly.

Months 1–4

Follicles enter a dormant phase. Your scalp looks similar to before the procedure during this stretch. Continue any prescribed medical therapy to protect your surrounding hair. You can return to the gym at week 3.

Months 8–12+

New growth becomes visible. Hair starts fine and light, then thickens progressively through month 8. Density increases noticeably as growth continues.. By months 12 to 18, the grafts have thickened fully, blended with surrounding hair, and look completely natural. The transplanted follicles are permanent.

For a detailed breakdown of what happens each month, see our full hair transplant timeline guide.

WHY KOPELMAN HAIR NYC

Crown Density Restoration

Crown thinning is one of the most common patterns we treat at our NYC clinic. The crown sits at the back of the scalp and tends to lose density gradually, often before the hairline shows obvious recession.
Restoring this zone requires careful graft distribution because the crown spirals in a whorl pattern, which means each follicle has to be placed at the exact angle of its neighbors.
For most crown cases, you can expect to need between 1,500 and 3,000 grafts depending on the size of the thinning area and how much density you want to add. Patients with progressive loss may benefit from staging the work across two sessions so the donor zone is preserved for future needs.

Hair Transplant Costs in NYC

Cost of 2,000 Grafts in NYC

A 2,000-graft procedure generally runs between $30,000 and $40,000. This graft count suits patients with early-stage recession, a focused hairline correction, or targeted density work in one zone.

For a procedure involving 3,000 grafts, you can expect to pay between $35,000 and $40,000 at our New York clinic. Pricing varies based on:

  • Surgeon expertise: Board-certified surgeons with strong portfolios charge more.
  • Clinic facilities: Practices with advanced extraction tools and dedicated surgical suites charge accordingly.
  • Technique: FUE or FUT is selected depending on what makes the most sense for the patient.

3,000 grafts can cover the crown, rebuild a receding hairline, or add density across a moderately thinning area.

Larger cases involving 5,000 grafts generally cost between $45,000 and $50,000. Five thousand grafts typically covers the hairline, mid-scalp, and crown in patients with more advanced loss.

For patients who prefer to keep their existing hair length throughout the procedure, no-shave FUE is available. Pricing for this technique runs between $30,000 and $45,000, depending on graft count and case complexity.

  • Eyebrow transplant: $20,000 to $25,000
  • Beard transplant: $20,000 to $30,000

For a personalized estimate Dr. Kopelman will review what you need during your consultation.

COMMON QUESTIONS

NYC Hair Transplant
FAQs

Can a Hair Transplant in NYC Be Done in Areas Other Than the Scalp?
Yes. Hair implantation techniques work for any area with depleted follicles. At Kopelman Hair, we treat:
Hair transplants are considered cosmetic and fall outside standard insurance coverage.
The transplanted follicles are permanent because they come from a zone that is resistant to pattern baldness. The hair around them can continue to thin with age, which is why ongoing medical therapy is often recommended alongside surgery.
Pricing ranges between $30,000 and $50,000 depending on graft count, technique, and case complexity. A full pricing breakdown by procedure type will be discussed with you during your consultation with Dr. Kopelman.
For most patients, FUE is the preferred method. It leaves no linear scar, allows for short hairstyles afterward, and recovery is faster. FUT still remains a great option for patients who have dense thick hair. In many cases we now do combo cases with FUT and FUE performed on the same day.
Yes. Women experience thinning differently than men, usually showing as a wider part, reduced ponytail thickness, or diffuse loss across the top of the scalp. Both grafting and medical therapy work well for female patients.
Most patients feel comfortable going out by day 6 or 7, when a baseball cap covers the donor zone naturally. By day 10, the grafts are secure and any remaining scabs wash away with gentle cleansing.
Crown density cases generally require 1,500 to 3,000 grafts, depending on the size of the thinning area and how much density you want to add.
A procedure performed by a hair surgeon carries a low complication rate, but like any surgery, risks exist. These can include temporary swelling or numbness, minor infection, poor graft survival in a small percentage of follicles, and with FUT, a fine linear scar in the donor zone. Dr. Kopelman reviews your individual risk profile during the consultation and walks you through what to expect during recovery.
