What is a Hair Transplant?

A hair transplant procedure moves healthy follicles from a donor area, usually the back of the scalp, into thinning or balding zones. The follicles taken from the donor site are genetically resistant to the hormone DHT that causes pattern baldness, so once they take root in the new location, they keep growing.

The terms hair grafting, hair implants, and follicle transplantation all describe the same core process: transferring living follicles to restore density. At Kopelman Hair Restoration, this work goes beyond the scalp. We also perform eyebrow transplants in NYC to rebuild thin or sparse brows, along with advanced solutions for frontal hair loss.

FUE vs. FUT: Which Technique Is Right for You?

The two main grafting methods are FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation). Each suits a different patient profile.

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

Using a small punch, individual follicles are extracted one by one from the donor area leaving no linear scar. Recovery is faster, and patients can wear short hairstyles afterward. This is the most common request at our Manhattan clinic.

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)

Also called the strip method, FUT removes a thin band of hairbearing scalp from the donor area. The follicles are then dissected from that strip and placed into the area where you are experiencing hair loss. This technique is ideal for women and men with long hair.

The right choice depends on your hair loss pattern, donor density, scalp condition, and lifestyle. Dr. Kopelman walks you through both options during your consultation.

What to Expect for Your Hair Transplant

STEP 01

Consultation

Dr. Kopelman meets with you in person or virtually to review your medical history and assess your current hair loss pattern. You will start by submitting a medical intake form. During the consultation, Dr. Kopelman maps your new hairline, takes photographs, and sets realistic expectations for your results at 8 to 12 months. You will clearly understand what is required to restore a natural hairline following a transplant.
During this visit, Dr. Kopelman will:

STEP 02

Pre-Operative Planning

Before surgery our team will confirm the procedural details. You will receive a detailed instruction packet. Prescriptions will be sent to your pharmacy along with a list of recommended over the counter medications. The only hair loss medication to stop 2 weeks before surgery is minoxidil. We also encourage no alcohol consumption 1 month before surgery.

STEP 03

Surgery Day

On arrival your donor and recipient zones are marked and photographed. Local anesthesia numbs the scalp. The procedure has four stages:
  1. Hair Line Design: Most important step of the transplant process where Dr. Kopelman designs a natural hair line that is appropriate for you.
  2. Site creation: Dr. Kopelman creates microscopic recipient sites at the correct angle, depth, and density to mimic your natural hairline.
  3. Donor harvest: Follicles are extracted from the back of your scalp using FUE, FUT, or a combination of both.
  4. Placement: Two to three hair technicians place each graft simultaneously, working in parallel to keep follicles healthy and reduce total procedure time.

The procedure can take 8 hours – 10 hours.

    STEP 04

    Going Home

You leave with a saline spray for the recipient area and list of activity restrictions for the first 2 weeks.

At Kopelman Hair Restoration we will monitor you closely for the next few weeks. In order to keep your grafts healthy during the critical early phase it is important to follow all post-op instructions meticulously.

    STEP 05

    Recovery Timeline

Weeks 1–2 Light scabbing and mild swelling are normal and clear by day 14. You can return to work within 1 to 3 days and wear a loose cap after 5 days. Around week 3, all transplanted hairs will shed. Don’t worry this is expected and means your follicles are cycling correctly. After 2 weeks you can resume your use of minoxidil. You can return to the gym at week 3.

Months 1–4 Follicles enter a dormant phase. During this period your scalp will resort back to the way it looked prior to your transplant procedure. Continue any prescribed medical therapy to protect your surrounding hair.

Months 8–12+ New growth becomes visible. Hair starts fine and light, then thickens progressively through month 8. As growth continues the density of your hair becomes more noticeable. By months 12 to 18, the grafts have thickened fully, blended with surrounding hair, and look completely natural. The transplanted follicles are permanent. For a detailed breakdown of what happens each month, see our full hair transplant timeline guide.

    Crown Density Restoration

The crown sits at the apex of the scalp where the loss of hair density is one of the most common patterns of hair loss we encounter at our NYC clinic. This loss of density occurs gradually often before a change in the frontal hairline. Restoring this zone requires careful graft distribution because the crown spirals in a whorl pattern, which means each follicle has to be placed at the precise angles relative to its neighbors.
For most crown cases, you can expect to need between 1,500 and 3,000 grafts depending on the size of the thinning area and how much density you want to create.

Non-Surgical Hair Replacement Options in NYC

Surgery is not the only path to hair restoration. If you are in the early stages of thinning, several medical and in-office therapies can stabilize loss, thicken existing hair, and delay or remove the need for surgery altogether.

    COMMON QUESTIONS

    NYC Hair Transplant
    FAQs

Yes. Hair implantation techniques work for any area with depleted follicles. At Kopelman Hair Restoration, we treat:

Hair transplants are considered cosmetic and fall outside standard insurance coverage.
The transplanted follicles are permanent because they come from a zone that is resistant to pattern baldness. The hair around them can continue to thin with age, which is why ongoing medical therapy is often recommended alongside surgery.
Pricing ranges between $30,000 and $50,000 depending on graft count, technique, and case complexity. A full pricing breakdown by procedure type will be discussed with you during your consultation with Dr. Kopelman.
For most patients, FUE is the preferred method. It leaves no linear scar, allows for short hairstyles afterward, and recovery is faster. FUT still remains a great option for patients who have dense thick hair. In many cases we now do combo cases with FUT and FUE performed on the same day.
Yes. Women experience thinning differently than men, usually showing as a wider part, reduced ponytail thickness, or diffuse loss across the top of the scalp. Both grafting and medical therapy work well for female patients.
Most patients feel comfortable going out by day 6 or 7, when a baseball cap covers the donor zone naturally. By day 10, the grafts are secure and any remaining scabs wash away with gentle cleansing.
Crown density cases generally require 1,500 to 3,000 grafts, depending on the size of the thinning area and how much density you want to add.
A procedure performed by a hair surgeon carries a low complication rate, but like any surgery, risks exist. These can include temporary swelling or numbness, minor infection, poor graft survival in a small percentage of follicles, and with FUT, a fine linear scar in the donor zone. Dr. Kopelman reviews your individual risk profile during the consultation and walks you through what to expect during recovery.

The best candidates are adults in good general health who have stable or predictable hair loss patterns, adequate donor density at the back and sides of the scalp, and realistic expectations about results. Dr. Kopelman evaluates donor quality, the extent of existing loss, and your long-term thinning trajectory during the consultation to confirm whether surgery is the right approach now or whether medical therapy is the better first step.
