WHAT TO EXPECT

Step-by-Step:
What to Expect

A step-by-step look at what to expect from consultation through final results. Procedure time: 8 to 12 hours. Return to desk work: 1 to 3 days. Initial regrowth: around month 4. Final results: 12 to 18 months.
PHASE 01

Consultation

Dr. Kopelman examines your scalp, reviews your medical history, and maps your current loss pattern. He sets realistic expectations for your result at 8 to 12 months. You leave with a written plan, a graft estimate, a scheduled procedure date, and a clear picture of what your results will look like.
PHASE 02

Procedure Day

Your donor and recipient zones are marked and photographed on arrival. Local anesthesia numbs the scalp, then Dr. Kopelman and his team complete extraction, site creation, and graft placement. Most patients watch a film, eat lunch, and walk out the same day.
PHASE 03

First Two Weeks

Dr. Kopelman examines your scalp, reviews your medical history, and maps your current loss pattern. He sets realistic expectations for your result at 8 to 12 months. You leave with a written plan, a graft estimate, a scheduled procedure date, and a clear picture of what your results will look like.

PHASE 04

3 to 8 Months

Follicles enter a dormant phase between months one and four. New growth becomes visible from month four onward fine and lighter at first, then thickening progressively through month eight. You can return to the gym at week three. Medical therapy continues to protect surrounding follicles.
PHASE 05

Final Results

Density increases noticeably from month eight onward. Most patients begin styling normally by month nine. By months 12 to 18, the grafts have thickened fully, blended with surrounding hair, and look completely natural. Transplanted follicles are permanent.

COMMON QUESTIONS

NYC Hair Transplant
FAQs

Can a hair transplant be done in areas other than the scalp?
Yes. Hair implantation techniques work for any area with depleted follicles. At Kopelman Hair, we treat the scalp, eyebrows, beard, eyelashes, and scarred zones from prior procedures or trauma.
In most cases, no. Hair implantation is considered cosmetic and falls outside standard insurance coverage. Exceptions can include loss caused by trauma, scarring alopecia, or specific medical conditions. Confirm with your provider.
The transplanted follicles are permanent because they come from a zone resistant to pattern baldness. The hair around them can continue to thin with age, which is why ongoing medical therapy is often recommended alongside surgery.
Pricing runs between $25,000 and $45,000 depending on graft count, technique, and case complexity. A 2,000-graft procedure typically runs $25,000 to $40,000. A 5,000-graft case generally costs $40,000 to $45,000. Eyebrow and beard transplants run $20,000 to $30,000. A full cost breakdown by graft count is reviewed at your consultation.
For most patients, FUE is the preferred method. It leaves no linear scar, allows for short hairstyles afterward, and recovery is faster. FUT remains the better choice for patients needing very large graft counts in a single session. Dr. Kopelman walks you through both options during your consultation.
Yes. Women experience thinning differently — usually as a wider part, reduced ponytail thickness, or diffuse loss across the top of the scalp. Both grafting and medical therapy work well for female patients. Aldactone (spironolactone) is also available for hormonally driven female thinning.
Most patients feel comfortable going out by day 6 or 7, when a baseball cap covers the donor zone naturally. By day 10, the grafts are secure and any remaining scabs wash away with gentle cleansing.
Crown density cases generally require 1,500 to 3,000 grafts, depending on the size of the thinning area and how much density you want to add. Patients with progressive loss may benefit from staging the work across two sessions to preserve donor zone capacity.
The best candidates are adults in good general health with stable or predictable hair loss patterns, adequate donor density at the back and sides of the scalp, and realistic expectations about results. Dr. Kopelman evaluates donor quality, the extent of existing loss, and your long-term thinning trajectory during the consultation to confirm whether surgery is the right approach now or whether medical therapy is the better first step.
Yes. Virtual consultations are available for out-of-town patients and anyone who prefers to start from home. You receive a full evaluation, an honest treatment recommendation, a graft estimate, and the opportunity to ask every question you have before committing to anything.
