Hair Transplants
in NYC
Dr. Ross Kopelman and Dr. Joel Kopelman perform hair transplants in New York City for men and women who have hair thinning, balding, and receding hairlines. Both surgeons have completed hundreds of hair transplants between them.
You can choose between FUE and FUT during your consultation. The full procedure walkthrough, recovery timeline, pricing for hair transplants, and medication options are all below.
What is a Hair Transplant?
A hair transplant procedure moves healthy follicles from a donor area, usually the back of the scalp, into thinning or balding zones. The follicles taken from the donor site are genetically resistant to the hormone DHT that causes pattern baldness, so once they take root in the new location, they keep growing for life.
The terms hair grafting, hair implants, and follicle transplantation all describe the same core process: transferring living follicles to restore density. At Kopelman Hair Restoration, this work goes beyond the scalp. We also perform eyebrow transplants in NYC to rebuild thin or sparse brows, along with advanced solutions for frontal hair loss.

FUE vs. FUT: Which Technique Is Right for You?
The two main grafting methods are FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation). Each suits a different patient profile.
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)
With FUE, follicles are extracted one by one from the donor zone using a small punch tool. There is no linear scar, recovery is faster, and patients can wear short hairstyles afterward. This is the most common request at our Manhattan clinic.
FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)
Also called the strip method, FUT removes a thin band of scalp from the donor area. The follicles are then dissected from that strip and placed into the recipient zone. FUT can move more grafts in a single session, which makes it useful for patients with advanced balding, but it leaves a fine linear scar.

What to Expect for Your Hair Transplant
STEP 01
Consultation
Dr. Kopelman meets with you in person or virtually to review your medical history and assess your current hair loss pattern. You will start by submitting a medical intake form. During the consultation, Dr. Kopelman maps your new hairline, takes photographs, and sets realistic expectations for your results at 8 to 12 months. You will get a good appreciation for what is required to get a natural hair transplant result.
- Review your medical history, photos and examine your scalp to evaluate donor density
- Recommend a personalized graft count and technique
- Prescribe medical therapy if appropriate
- Answer all your questions about the process
Pre-Operative Visit
Your team confirms details before surgery. You receive a detailed instructions packet, prescription medications are sent to your pharmacy in advance, and you discuss anesthesia preferences. This visit can happen virtually for out-of-town patients.
STEP 03
Surgery Day
On arrival your donor and recipient zones are marked and photographed. Local anesthesia numbs the scalp. The procedure has four stages:
- Hair Line Design: Most important step of the transplant process where Dr. Kopelman designs a natural hair line that is appropriate for you.
- Site creation: Dr. Kopelman creates microscopic recipient sites at the correct angle, depth, and density to mimic your natural hairline.
- Donor harvest: Follicles are extracted from the back of your scalp using FUE, FUT, or a combination of both.
- Placement: Two to three hair technicians place each graft simultaneously, working in parallel to keep follicles healthy and reduce total procedure time.
Patients spend 8 to 12 hours in the chair and go home the same day.
STEP 04
Going Home
You leave with a saline spray for the recipient area and a list of activity restrictions for the first 2 weeks.
Dr. Kopelman follows you closely for the next few weeks. Follow all post-op instructions closely, they’re what keep your grafts healthy during the critical early phase.
STEP 05
Recovery Timeline
Weeks 1–2
Light scabbing and mild swelling are normal and clear by day 14. You can wear a loose cap from day one and return to work within 1 to 3 days. Around week 3, all transplanted hairs will have shed. This is expected and means your follicles are cycling correctly.
Months 1–4
Follicles enter a dormant phase. Your scalp looks similar to before the procedure during this stretch. Continue any prescribed medical therapy to protect your surrounding hair. You can return to the gym at week 3.
Months 8–12+
New growth becomes visible. Hair starts fine and light, then thickens progressively through month 8. Density increases noticeably as growth continues.. By months 12 to 18, the grafts have thickened fully, blended with surrounding hair, and look completely natural. The transplanted follicles are permanent.
For a detailed breakdown of what happens each month, see our full hair transplant timeline guide.
Crown Density Restoration
Crown thinning is one of the most common patterns we treat at our NYC clinic. The crown sits at the back of the scalp and tends to lose density gradually, often before the hairline shows obvious recession.
Restoring this zone requires careful graft distribution because the crown spirals in a whorl pattern, which means each follicle has to be placed at the exact angle of its neighbors.
Hair Transplant Costs in NYC
Pricing depends on graft count, technique, and the complexity of your case. FUE typically costs more than FUT because it takes longer and requires more precision.
Cost of 2,000 Grafts in NYC
A 2,000-graft procedure generally runs between $30,000 and $40,000. This graft count suits patients with early-stage recession, a focused hairline correction, or targeted density work in one zone.
Cost of 3,000 Grafts in NYC
For a procedure involving 3,000 grafts, you can expect to pay between $35,000 and $40,000 at our New York clinic. 3,000 grafts can cover the crown, rebuild a receding hairline, or add density across a moderately thinning area.
Cost of 5,000 Grafts in NYC
Larger cases involving 5,000 grafts generally cost between $45,000 and $50,000. Five thousand grafts typically covers the hairline, mid-scalp, and crown in patients with more advanced loss.
Unshaven FUE
For patients who prefer to keep their existing hair length throughout the procedure, no-shave FUE is available. Pricing for this technique runs between $30,000 and $45,000, depending on graft count and case complexity.
Eyebrow and Beard Transplant Pricing
Eyebrow transplant: $20,000 to $25,000
Beard transplant: $20,000 to $30,000
For a personalized estimate, Dr. Kopelman will review what you need during your consultation.

Non-Surgical Hair Replacement Options in NYC
Surgery is not the only path. If you are in the early stages of thinning, several medical and in-office therapies can stabilize loss, thicken existing hair, and delay or remove the need for surgery altogether.
Medical Therapy
- Dutasteride is used off-label and is more potent than finasteride at blocking DHT. Typically reserved for men who have not responded to finasteride.
- Propecia (Finasteride) is an FDA-approved oral medication that blocks DHT, the hormone responsible for follicle miniaturization. It works well for men in early to mid-stage loss.
- Minoxidil is a topical treatment (Rogaine), also available off-label as an oral pill, that improves blood flow to follicles. It is effective for both men and women.
- PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) uses growth factors drawn from your own blood, injected into the scalp to stimulate follicles.
- Mesotherapy with dutasteride at our office uses dutasteride injected directly into the scalp. This delivers the DHT-blocking effect locally, targeting follicles at the source across a series of sessions.

What Our
Patients Are Saying
Posted on barret abramow I recently had a FUE hair transplant with Dr. Kopelman in New York City, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results. I had 2,800 grafts focused on restoring my hairline, which had become more recessed than I was comfortable with. The change has been subtle yet transformative — my hairline looks completely natural, and it frames my face in a way that feels more like me. It’s not overly dramatic, just exactly what I hoped for. What really stood out about working with Dr. Kopelman and his team was their expertise and attention to detail. From the initial consultation, it was clear they understood how to approach my specific situation to achieve the best outcome. The procedure itself went smoothly, and the aftercare instructions were thorough and easy to follow. I felt confident every step of the way because of how knowledgeable and professional they were. Finding their practice in NYC was a relief — it’s not easy to trust just anyone with something as personal as your hairline. I’m really glad I chose them because they delivered excellent results without any of the typical hype. If you’re considering a hair transplant, this is definitely the team to go to.Posted on Beth Zimmerman I am very happy with my experience with Dr. Kopelman. They are an amazing team. I wanted to understand why my hair was thinning after using a shampoo a dermatologist had sent my way to stop my bad dandruff problem. He was so patient through my 10 million questions, I felt he really cared about what I need instead of feeding into a consumerist magic pill. He also was able to find that I could be balding and give me tips and a prescription and I felt like he saved me from tripping over a ledge I didn't see. Thank you so much!Posted on K Salalah I've been to many hair specialists, and I can confidently say that Dr. Kopelman and his team stand out for their incredible care and attention. Six stars!Posted on Andres Delgado I had a consultation with Dr. Joel Kopelman. It was worth my time and money. The doctor answered all my questions and provided valuable insights.
